SPECIAL REPORT: AUTONOMOUS DRIVING
Autonomous Driving: The Interdependence
of Safety and Security
By Anne-Françoise Pelé
afety is the prerequisite and the baseline for developing and deploying autonomous vehicles, and
there can be no safety without security.
Safety is the protection against accidental damage, while security is the protection against
Sintentional damage. More than ever, safety and security are interrelated concepts that will enable
automotive developers to deliver on the promise of full Level 4/Level 5 autonomy.
How can we build dependable systems that are both safe and secure? What happens if one function fails?
Would that failure compromise the whole system, or can we guarantee real-time safety in the event of fail-
ure? Why is a fail-operational architecture essential for safe autonomous driving? Why are redundancy and
fault tolerance necessary at the hardware level? How do chiplets enable high-performance computing in
software-defined vehicles? How can in-cabin monitoring systems contribute to vehicle safety?
In this Special Report, we discuss the interdependence of safety and security in autonomous driving and
the importance of establishing trust early in the design process. To this end, we take you to the heart of
automotive innovation with contributions by Codethink, Kardome, LDRA, MIPI Alliance, Secure-IC, and
TTTech Auto, as well as discussions with Blueskeye AI, Hailo, HERE Technologies, IDTechEx, imec, Infineon
Technologies, Innoviz Technologies, Mobileye, Perforce Software, Smart Eye, Valeo, Volvo Autonomous
Solutions, and WeRide. ■
