          Technology

          By M. Di Paolo Emilio

Setting up an industrial devices network has costs, and more than 60% of those costs are related to ca-
bling and installation. While wireless data transfer can help eliminate some cabling, even more could be
avoided with the addition of wireless technology for power transfer. The cover of this issue is about Wire-
less charging systems in higher power applications. Marcel Konstantinov and Ken Moore will analyze the
most significant challenges for designers and the benefits for the market. In higher power designs, sev-

eral design challenges are amplified compared to lower power wireless charging due to the higher power
levels. The concept of wireless energy transfer has long been known, for over 100 years to be precise, and
dates back to the invention of the Tesla coil. A key factor in wireless energy transmission is efficiency.
The efficiency of the wireless power transfer depends on the design of both magnetics (coils) and elec-

parameters, from coil inductance over voltage and current levels to mechanical packaging and electro-
magnetic interference (EMI). We are living in an era that is driven by electrification and automatization,
with a special focus on reducing pollution and increasing efficiencies, and the power electronics market
