Power Supply SEMICONDUCTORS
In development of the MPE2000, reliability and compliance with medical industry standards like
IEC60601-1 were primary considerations. These are important to our customers. We continue to
work with our customers to ensure their power needs are met. Wide-bandgap semiconductors are
a valuable technological option to consider in developing solutions for our customers.
PEN: Providing energy to a laser is not an easy task. Lasers are extremely sensitive
and easily damaged. A single pulse of excessive current, lasting a few microseconds,
can overheat and damage the semiconductor structure that emits light from a
laser diode. The current instability will influence the junction’s temperature, such
as to induce variations in the wavelength. What are the solutions to achieve that?
And what are your customers asking you in terms of performance?
Mitra: Medical lasers operate at extremely high frequencies. They also demand high currents within
nanosecond timeframes. In developing the MPE2000 medical rectifier, the key challenges that
we focused on were optimizing peak pulse-load current and meeting rigorous transient response
requirements of these demanding applications while ensuring a stable and reliable power quality, GaN Semiconductors
which, in turn, helps with prolonging the life of the power supply under such stressful conditions.
Reduce Cost Per
Additionally, varying pulse frequencies (0 to 50 kHz) can create harmonic resonance issues in the
powertrain, which we have addressed through our ability to fine-tune our power supply to the Watt of Solar Energy
application’s needs.

For More Information It is estimated that fossil fuels currently account for two-thirds of all electricity generated worldwide,
while solar and wind are responsible for just 7% of electricity production. However, meeting the
goals for net-zero carbon emissions will require an accelerated shift away from fossil fuels to
▶ ABB Power Conversion renewable energy sources. Fundamental to improving adoptions of renewables is a reduction in the
cost per watt of conversion, increased capacity of energy storage, and higher energy-conversion
▶ Medical Power Supplies efficiency. As legacy silicon power switches reach their limits, gallium nitride (GaN) will play an
increasingly critical role in all these areas.
