Electric motors are widely used in several electronic applications, to the point that we can say they are everywhere. In our homes, we have multiple examples, such as fans, hair dryers, fan heaters, kitchen appliances, and more. In this issue, we introduce the fundamental concepts that every designer should have to face when facing a motor control application. Other topics include GaN and several aspects of power management. GaN devices in particular can be switched at much higher frequencies, allowing for a reduction in the size of magnetics while also enabling reduced active count topologies such as the bridgeless totem-pole power factor correction (PFC)-based converter. The demand for greater performance within the same or smaller form factor focuses designers’ minds on techniques to increase power density. We analyze power management challenges, strategies for next-gen vehicles, and more. Enjoy!
